The wooded area behind Songo Beach contains at least one confirmed
Native American burial site. Erosion of the Songo River delta and beaches
in recent years has caused the destruction of important Native American
archaeological sites.
7. Analysis of impacts of lake-level management
on the archaeological resources of Sebago Lake.
FOSL supports the written comments submitted by Richard
A. Doyle regarding the archaeological resources of Sebago Lake at the
Commission's public scoping meeting on October 22, 2002 at Windham High
School.
FOSL requests that thorough site testing be done on all potential archaeological
site areas of Sebago Lake affected by the new water level management plan,
including those areas undergoing active erosion. Special concentration is
required in the Basin, Songo River delta area, the Songo and Crooked River
and Sebago Lake State Park beach areas. FOSL believes that at least one
site at Songo Beach has been destroyed by the erosion that occurred in the
late 1980s.
FOSL believes the Songo beach area is one of the larger ancient native American
ceremonial grounds in Maine. FOSL believes that the Songo beach area may
contain many graves. Since the delta area could continue eroding for many
decades identification and protection of these sites is critical. This has
not been done.
