Saccarappa Falls, Presumpscot River, Westbrook, Maine. April, 2000.
Dam spillway in distance. FOSL and other conservation groups are working
to the remove this antiquated, low-power dam that destroys over five miles
of quality native fish habitat in the Presumpscot River.
Historical fact: the construction of milldams on this falls in the mid
1700s without fish passage caused Westbrook citizens to successfully seek
a court order against the dam owner, John Wait, to build fishways. Today,
the dam's current owner, South African Pulp & Paper Industries (SAPPI)
refuses to build fishways here for salmon, shad, alewives, sea-run brook
trout and other native fish.
