The Destruction of Sebago Lake State Park Beach

August, 1994. Due to a drought, Sebago lake water levels approximated
the 100-year historic average for the lake. These conditions allowed Songo
Beach bathers to enjoy this famous beach in something approaching its normal
state. The beach should be approx. 30 feet wider, however severe erosion
after lake levels were raised in 1987 has removed much of the sand from
Songo Beach, even at historic summer water levels.

July 12, 1999. Bathers are forced retreat to the woods under the
"compromise" water management plan for Sebago Lake which places
most of Songo Beach underwater for most of the summer season. Note the collapsing
tree behind the bather and the large root ball of a recently killed red
pine (red arrow).
At this date in July, the lake level was 265.1 feet msl, the lake level
the State of Maine has mandated for the peak bathing season. Due to this
political decision, only in severe drought years will summer visitors to
Sebago Lake State Park ever enjoy Songo Beach in its natural condition again.
